LECTURE-RECITAL: PRESENTATION OF EVA MOREDA’S BOOKS: ‘Music and exile in Francoist Spain’ and ‘Music Criticism and Music Critics in Early Francoist Spain’, published by Oxford University Press

Lecturer: Prof. EVA MOREDA (University of Glasgow)

17th November 2017 7pm at Kings College London, room SWB 21

The Civil War and the subsequent exile is often understood as a divide between the so-called ‘two-Spains’; in this talk, however, I would like to approach the issue from a different perspectives and explore the continuities, similarities and collaborations between the Spanish composers and musicologists who took exile in Europe or America in 1939 and those who stayed in Spain. Indeed, most Spanish composers of this era were heavily indebted to Pedrell’s and Falla’s nationalist thinking of the first decades of the twentieth century and, throughout their lives, most of them tried to answer the same questions through their writings and their music: what does it mean to write Spanish music that is suitable for this era and in line with what is going on in the rest of the world? And which role should Spanish early and traditional music play?

Songs by Julián Orbón, Julián Bautista, Manuel de Falla and Joaquín Rodrigo are performed live by Lorena Paz Nieto (soprano) and Ricardo Gosalbo (piano).

Admittance is free. As the auditorium capacity is limited, registration is highly recommended:
