The beginnings of recorded music in Spain

This lecture-recital will cover, through both historical recordings and live performance, the beginnings (1896-1914) of commercial recorded music in Spain, both in the hands of multinationals such as Gramophone and Victor, and small-scale local businesses (the so-called ‘gabinetes fonográficos’) which recorded on wax cylinders. Particular attention will be paid to the first Spanish opera and zarzuela singers to record for the phonograph and gramophone; their names are scarcely known nowadays (Josefina Huguet, Pepita Alcácer, Marina Gurina, Anita Lopeteghi, Amalia Campos, etc.), but their voices open up a fascinating window on the singing techniques and repertoires that Spaniards were familiar with around 1900.

Esta conferencia-concierto explorará, a través de grabaciones históricas y música en directo, los inicios (1896-1914) de la fonografía comercial en España, tanto a manos de multinacionales como Gramophone y Victor como de pequeños negocios locales conocidos como “gabinetes fonográficos” que grababan en cilindros de cera. La conferencia prestará especial atención a las primeras cantantes españolas de ópera y zarzuela en realizar grabaciones fonográficas y gramofónicas, cuyos nombres son hoy poco conocidos (Josefina Huguet, Pepita Alcácer, Marina Gurina, Anita Lopeteghi, Amalia Campos, etc.), pero cuyas voces nos abren una fascinante ventana sobre las técnicas de canto y los repertorios que se escuchaban en España en torno a 1900.
