The beginnings of recorded music in Spain This lecture-recital will cover, through both historical recordings and live performance, the beginnings (1896-1914) of commercial recorded music in Spain, both in the hands of multinationals such as Gramophone and Victor, and small-scale local businesses (the so-called 'gabinetes fonográficos') which recorded on wax cylinders. Particular attention will be paid to the first Spanish opera and zarzuela singers to record for the phonograph and gramophone; their names are scarcely known nowadays (Josefina Huguet, Pepita…
